The following was prepared by Ross Newton and read out by friend Malcolm Stuart at Iains funeral on 8th September 2009. Iain or Scotty to many, was a founding member of Letchworth Velo Club formed in 1959 by a small band of enthusiastic roadmen. They quickly turned their attentions to both Road Race and Time Trial promotion. This was in order to ensure a full season of racing for themselves, at a time when gaining entry to events was far from easy. In doing so they performed an enormous service to cycling racing in the South East with the provision of more than a dozen open races a season from the early sixties onwards. These events were immensely popular with riders from London, Northants and East Anglia as well as surrounding counties. Competitors also came from much further afield. In 1990, and only a matter of days before the clubs annual two day race, Iain received a call from Keith Lambert asking if he could accomodate the entire British Pro cintingent who had been left without an event following an out of the blue race cancellation. Brilliant as always in a crisis situation, Scotty accepted the challenge, and an outstanding weekend of racing took place won by the mercurial Joey McLoughlin from a field that included the late Dave Rayner and the entire whos who of Btitish Pro Racing at that time. In the late nineties and following a chance encounter with Womens National Champion Maxine Johnson Iain directed the clubs attentins to womens racing with Maxine at the forefront of what became an all conquering Letchworth Velo Ladies Team. The fact that this highly talented group of ladies won the team prize for all four National RTTC events,5,10, 25, and 100 miles in the same year, an RTCC record, says a lot about the ladies. It also says an equal amount about the organisational and motivational skills of Iain and his small band of helpers. One of the more recent events that Iain and the Letchworth Velo organised was the 1999 National Womens Road Race held on an extremely tough windswept circuit near Royston. This was won by sixteen year old Nicole Cooke from her breakaway companion, and world reigning World Pursuit Champion, Yvonne McGregor. It was always one of Iains proudest claims that he had the honour and privilege to subseqently manage Nicole when he took a team of ladies from various clubs, including Letchworth Velo, to Malta to compete in a stage race. Iain was always the first to reconise that he and the Letchworth Velo were lucky to have been around when the traffic, policing and insurance problems of today did not exist. Much of his success was due to the fact that whether you were first or last in a race and indeed whether you were in his club or someone elses he was always there to physically support you and give encouragement. He also recognised that every Club Member, regardless of what position they occupied on race days, were equally important to the success of the operation. What Iain, his right and left arms Brenda and Sarah, and all the members of the Letchworth Velo achieved together, was an absolute joy to experience. It made the kind of stuff from which legends are made. Iain leaves his beloved family, wife Brenda, daughter Sarah, son in law Ross and grandchildren Lewis, Millie and Daisy. My sincere thanks to Ross Newton who prepared these notes. Brenda asked for donations to The British Lung Foundation, and would like to thank everyone for their support. We have now set up The Breath of Life Fund in memory of Iain, and would ask for your continued support in all fundraising. Thank you all Brenda and Sarah.
